Today we pay tribute to all the women who stand on the front lines on the Slovak border with Ukraine. “After four days, we arrived with my mom and the dog. Now we are volunteering here, because that is now the only way we can help Ukraine and our fathers and brothers. I can’ t shoot, and this is the only way I can help. Mom writes advice and information on social media all day long.” says Kateryna, standing next to her friend Oksana at the Košice train station.
“I’m doing this for the kids who are coming.” Says experienced nurse Anna from the Slovak Red Cross station in Vyšné Nemecké. She has been working as a nurse for over 40 years and helping people is her mission, she says. Together with Dominika they help people fleeing from the war zone by providing them with necessary medical assistance and information.
Katarina from NGO Mareena says that “helping people in general and helping people to assimilate in Slovakia is a space for her, where she feels helpful, fulfilled and useful”. Together with Kristina, they make sure that the refugees get as much information and assistance as possible before continuing on their journey. Nuns working for the Order of Malta are no exceptions in helping Ukrainians crossing the border.
Thank you for the love, determination and courage you give to all those fleeing the horrors of war and killing. Slovakia, we stand by you for how admirably you help and stand by Ukraine.
